This is a full-time term position for a 12-month period, probable renewal pending project award.
The Mechanical Technician Associate will be part of the Ann Arbor Connected Vehicle Test Environment team and will equip vehicles with connected vehicle technology for deployment in Ann Arbor.
Mechanical/Electrical installation, updates, and removals of vehicle awareness devices (VAD) and/or aftermarket safety devices (ASD) to be deployed on personal vehicles in the Ann Arbor area.
Prepare and maintain the device configuration in the configuration management system.
Document and maintain the vehicle installations, updates, and removals in the configuration management system with photographs, measurements and other vehicle information.
Harvest data from the VADS and upload to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) server using in-house download program.
Experience with the mechanical modification of components, auto body trim, and interior panel assemblies. Basic computing skills to allow for interacting with a configuration management system and to upload data from devices. An Associate’s degree in electronics or related field is desirable or up to two years of related experience.
Familiarity with dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) technology is a plus.
Building upon the successful Safety Pilot Model Deployment project, UMTRI continues to maintain and operate the world’s largest connected vehicle deployment. In additional to the continuing roles for SPMD above, the UMTRI team have been very active in the industry to lead efforts to implement the changing DSRC standards. All of the equipment from the Safety Pilot Model Deployment will be decommissioned and replaced with new hardware that meets the 2016 industry standards. The AACVTE will expand the infrastructure footprint from 25 sites in Northeast Ann Arbor to 70 sites encompassing all of Ann Arbor (27 square miles). Additionally, 3100 DSRC-equipped vehicles will be deployed. AACVTE will be the first fully compliant real-world DSRC deployment that will interface with the Production Security Credential Management System and will be the standard for a national deployment.
