Treatment Plant Technician/Instrumentation Technician I Description Under general supervision, perform skilled installation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of electrical and electronic systems, equipment and instrumentation such as found in a major wastewater treatment plant.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This class is the entry level class in the Treatment Plant Electrician Instrumentation Technician series.
Treatment Plant Technician/Instrumentation Technician II Description Perform highly skilled installation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of electrical and electronic systems, equipment and instrumentation found in a major wastewater treatment plant. Successful performance of the work requires not only journey-level electrician skills but a specialized knowledge of plant equipment and controls.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the experienced class in the Treatment Plant Electrician & Instrumentation Technician.
Inspect, install, maintain, repair and test electrical circuits, motors, pumps, generators, transformers, relays and other plant electrical equipment and facilities. Use a variety of electrical and electronic test equipment and apparatus.
Inspect, install, maintain, repair, test and calibrate varied electronic information and control instrumentation and systems. Perform basic maintenance and adjustment to real time computer control systems and software.
Perform troubleshooting and diagnostic work on a variety of plant electrical, electronic and instrumentation equipment and systems. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance as required.
Install and/or work with or inspect the work of contractors installing plant equipment and systems. Modify electrical, electronic and instrumentation systems to meet operational needs.
Make or modify as-built drawings of electrical, electronic and instrumentation installation.
Make estimates of labor, materials and supplies required to perform specific assignments. Orders supplies as needed.
Maintain accurate records of work performed and equipment performance.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required and other duties which may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Hazardous environment for electrical systems per NEC/NFPA standards
High voltage troubleshooting and switching
Principles, techniques, tools, equipment and materials used in the electrical, electronic and instrumentation trades
Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power and shop tools, test equipment and other equipment common to plant electrical, electronic and instrumentation work
Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work
Safety precautions for working around hazardous chemicals and equipment
Codes, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the work
AC/DC theory and control circuits
Electronic control and instrumentation systems and real time computer applications
Work on high voltage electrical circuits, electronic information and control systems and other specialized installations including a variety of instrumentation
Estimate materials and equipment necessary to complete assigned jobs
Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision
Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, plans and specifications
Make accurate mathematical calculations
Prepare accurate records of work performed
Computer applications and software related to the work including Microsoft Office
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted during work
Requires ability to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Duties require sufficient vision, hearing and manual dexterity to perform assigned duties and sufficient strength and stamina to climb stairways and ladders, to walk and stand for extended periods of time and to maneuver equipment and tools. Must be willing to work with exposure to chemicals used in the wastewater treatment process and be willing to wear and work in self-contained breathing apparatus.
SUPPLEMENTAL JOB INFORMATION
This is a Civil Service position and is Non-Exempt under FLSA guidelines
Must be willing to work with exposure to chemicals used in the wastewater treatment process and be willing to wear and work in self-contained breathing apparatus
Must be willing to be called back, held over, work off-hours, night, weekend and/or holiday shifts
Must be willing to work assigned shifts in emergency situations
This position reports to a Crew Supervisor
Supervision exercised: May provide training to employees on a project or day to day basis
Must pass a background investigation
May be required to pass a pre-placement drug screen
Applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications to continue in the recruitment process:
Treatment Plant Electrician/Instrumentation Technician I Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of electrical and instrumentation installation and maintenance work. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in an appropriate trade, college or technical school coursework is preferred. Experience in a wastewater treatment plant or similar operational setting is preferred.
Treatment Plant Technician/Instrumentation Technician II Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of electronics/instrumentation installation and maintenance work in which two (2) years of experience is equivalent to the City's Treatment Plant Technician & Instrumentation Technician I class. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in an appropriate trade, college or technical school coursework is preferred. Experience in a plant or similar operational setting is preferred.
Licenses and Certificates: Specified positions may require possession and maintenance of the equivalent to a valid Nevada Class C driver's license within thirty (30) days of hire.
Civil Service Testing
The Civil Service examination for this recruitment will be in two (2) stages. First, applicants must complete the Training & Experience questions at the end of this job posting. The Training and Experience questions will comprise 50% of the candidate's overall score for this recruitment. It is therefore to the candidate's advantage to answer each question as thoroughly and detailed as possible. Candidates will then move to the written examination stage of the application process. The written examination will comprise the remaining 50% of the candidate's overall score.
You must be available for the written examination in Sparks, Nevada on Wednesday, August 30, 2017. There will be no alternative dates or make-up examinations.
