This position will report directly to the BLS Manager.
(15%) Prospective Recruitment
Review surgery schedule and evaluate prospective collections
Meet with prospective researchers to evaluate needs and BLS/BioNet ability to add value
Network with other departments and organizations to promote the advantages of BLS/BioNet involvement
Contact and coordinate with prospective internal and/or external sample recipients
(30%) Participant Enrollment
Screen OR schedules for appropriate tissue collection for current projects/protocols per review of patient medical histories, obtain informed consent from patients.
Enroll appropriate participants/patients for a specific protocol/project.
Obtain informed consent if required by the protocol or verify that another party is responsible for consent.
Notify the appropriate service area of BLS/BioNet collections
Coordinate with gross room for an efficient collection within the prescribed time limits
(30%) Tissue Procurement
Evaluate current authorized researchers to distribute possible collections
Be able to determine by grossly examining the tissue specimen appropriateness for researcher protocols
Aliquot sample into appropriate media for research needs
Distribute specimens as appropriate
Transport specimens to and from the BLS Histology lab and effectively communicate with lab staff for most efficient utilization of resources
Cryopreserve specimens for biobank/biorepository if needed
Prepare tissue for quality controls
Coordinate after hours collections with multiple participants, by pager, e-mail, and/or phone contacts
Sort and accession specimens for temperature controlled storage
Reconcile inventory, retrieve and ship specimens
Provide prompt, responsive customer service for researcher inquiries and service requests
Maintain tissue procurement and quality control records
Enter specimen data into database
Document activities to effectively capture time and resource expended
Produce specimen reports and information
Maintain and file records
(15%) Workflow and Team Support
Assist in training, scheduling, and coordination of the BLS staff and student employees to accomplish daily activities and support researcher needs.
Train new staff, including students, on BLS policies, practices, and procedures.
Assist with scheduling and coordinating the daily tissue procurement schedule. Ensure that schedules are met in a timely fashion.
Provide service coverage in all BLS divisions as needed (i.e., BioNet, Integrated Processing Network, Specimen & Data Repository, Histology & Research Laboratory, Digital Imaging).
(5%) Equipment and Supplies
Maintain and monitor biospecimen freezers and LN tanks
Monitor inventory and order supplies to ensure uninterrupted workflow
Assist with BLS/BioNet equipment assessment, installation, qualification, validation, monitoring, and maintenance.
(5%) Procedure Development/Implementation and Process Improvement
Document BLS role in specific protocols
Assist with development and documentation of BLS work process and procedures.
Assist with ensuring implementation of working orders, protocol specific instructions and all applicable regulations as they apply to biospecimen collection, processing, storage and distribution/shipment.
Perform other duties as assigned by the BLS Manager.

Required Qualifications (must be documented)
BA/BS in Nursing, Gross Room, Surgical Pathology, Histology, Biological Sciences or related field or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years
Demonstrated/documented knowledge of medical terminology to screen procedures for appropriate specimen collection and to abstract medical information from patient charts
Proficient data entry and computer skills
Fluency in English in order to explain consents to patients and families
Ability to lift 50 lbs in order to lift freezer racks as needed
Demonstrated/documented excellent oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated/documented excellent customer service skills
Demonstrated/documented excellent work ethic and teamwork skills
Demonstrated/documented excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively, good problem-solving skills, ability to multi-task
Biorepository, histology, and/or laboratory work experience
Experience working with patients and obtaining informed consent
Experience with abstraction of medical information from medical charts
Familiarity with Surgical Pathology clinical workflow
Knowledge of universal precautions, lab safety procedures, and blood borne pathogens
Experience with Microsoft Office software
Working knowledge or ability to learn and utilize electronic databases
Experience distinguishing and identifying human tissues
