In this molecular HIV-1 laboratory the Laboratory Technician will utilize their solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and experience with molecular biology and cell culture. Capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and interpreting results. Works effectively as a team-member and exhibits excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Will provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis. Will be assigned an independent project and participate in the creation of manuscripts. Participates in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices. Operates appropriate equipment. Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble and/or format scientific reports.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Isolation of peripheral blood lymphocytes and monocytes from normal human blood or from the blood of HIV-infected patients.
Perform in vitro infection studies with HIV-1. Propagates cell lines, performs transfection of eukaryotic cells, and transduction of cells with recombinant adenoviral vectors.
Develop ELISA based assays. Performs general molecular biology techniques such at cloning, PCR, and Western blotting.
Performs specialized histology techniques such as confocal microscopy and characterize cell populations using flow cytometry.
Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
High School Diploma.
Minimum of one-year experience in a laboratory performing relevant techniques is preferred.
Must be willing to work under Biohazard Level 2 Safety conditions with HIV-1.
Must display willingness to learn and implement new technologies.
