General Summary: The purpose of this position is to carry out ongoing, NIH-funded projects related to aging, viral infections, and mitochondrial dysfunction in humans and animal models. Following routine protocols under the supervision of a faculty investigator, the research specialist is responsible for independently performing laboratory tests utilizing requisite lab equipment and instruments, making adjustments as required. Occasionally may participate in developing new protocols as research needs arise, for PI approval. Typically works with biohazardous materials. Responsible for laboratory maintenance, preparing solutions and media and ordering supplies. Will be responsible for care of laboratory animals. Working with PI, may participate in design experimental approaches for research projects. Perform a range of sophisticated assays. Make significant/important contributions to various aspects of research efforts. May include troubleshooting, independent decisions and training/guidance of other lab personnel. Responsible for assigned daily lab research projects. Utilize specialized knowledge to interpret results (i.e. reading controls and interpreting results). Order equipment and supplies and interface with vendors. Use scientific knowledge and lab experience to make judgments and decisions. Works independently. Teach/train students and new technicians in the lab. Guide, direct and facilitate problem solving for entry level lab members on day-to-day problems with more challenging research assays. Make scientific contribution to protocol development, efficiency, and productivity. Collaborate in development of new techniques and instruments. Apply published research methods to current experimental work by investigating published protocols and discussing them with PI. Process analyzed data into figures for scientific publications.
Essential Job Functions: Participates in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices. Assesses QA/QC of laboratory data. Keeps accurate and up-to-date records of experiments performed. Operates basic laboratory equipment, such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, thermal cycler, etc. May also utilize sophisticated instrumentation. Operates lab computers for data entry. Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate, and/or format data and/or test reports. Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment. Monitors equipment performance and maintenance schedules. May perform routine repair or replacement of standard parts. Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace. Completes university safety training, as appropriate. Uses sterile technique to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures. Keeps current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments used in research experiments. Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
Education : Required: Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field.
Experience: Minimum 1 year in a comparable lab performing relevant techniques, coupled with a survey knowledge of biological sciences, chemistry, or related field. Must be detail oriented, keep clear experimental records, have effective organizational skills, and be able to prioritize workload appropriately. Must be able to perform multiple tasks efficiently and correctly, often operating more than one instrument at a time. Experience in basic laboratory procedures required. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with cardiomyocyte isolation, mitochondrial functional measures including ATP and free radicals measurements.
